Anna Carey
Anna Carey was born in 1987. Her work overlaps photography, model-making, film and drawing. Through memory and imagination, she creates fictive architectural spaces based on familiar iconic architecture. Carey completed a Bachelor of Visual Media with Honours (first class) at Queensland College of Art and is currently undertaking postgraduate studies with QCA. She has exhibited at Photo la, Los Angeles; Artereal Gallery, Sydney; Andrew Baker Art Dealer, Brisbane; Dlux Media Arts, Federation Square Melbourne and the Museum of Brisbane. She has been shortlisted in numerous prizes including The Churchie National Emerging Art Award, the Queensland Regional Art Awards and the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award which she received the acquisition award. Her work has been acquired by the National Gallery of Australia, Artbank, Gold Coast City Art Gallery, University of Queensland, Caboolture Regional Art Gallery and numerous private collections.
Anna Carey’s works Brick Archway 2010 and Wood Veneer 2010 never fail to deceive—that is, we are always convinced they are, other than what they are. Even though our disbelief is quickly shattered, we still get caught up in the desire for them to be real—even for a moment. Carey says her fascination with mid-twentieth century architecture developed growing up in the Gold Coast with a love of local iconic architectural styles. It was only some years later travelling to Los Angeles and Las Vegas that she discovered the source of the Gold Coast’s architectural flamboyance. So that what she always believed was real, and local was only ever a model of something else. Perhaps this is the pathos we feel in these works, but there is also the joy of the make believe.
